Testing news

INSPEC is proud to be the only laboratory currently ISO 17025 accredited for testing cricket helmets against the new British Standard BS 7928:2013 + A1:2019.

INSPEC was actively involved in the development of the standard through the British Standards Technical Committee.

The major improvement in the 2013 issue is the inclusion of a test to assess the performance of the grille in preventing facial contact by the ball.  It is hoped that the injuries typified by those suffered by England player Stuart Broad will thus be prevented.  See http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/28724788.

The 2019 amendment adds further to the standard by inclusion of a test and an assessment to evaluate the performance of neck protectors.

A new piece of test equipment was required to enable the facial contact test to be performed. Our highly experienced, in-house engineers designed and manufactured the new test cannon, which propels cricket balls at speeds matching those of fast bowlers.

In providing both testing and certification services, INSPEC is currently working with the majority of the well-known cricket helmet manufacturers, who have been developing their products to provide the additional performance.

This is another example of where INSPEC has been able to combine our expertise in test equipment design/manufacture, testing and certification to provide comprehensive support for our clients.
